Where to look, by type of service

Mobile banking and finance apps. The section is in the profile menu. On Revolut, there is no code at all: the app generates a personal link from the “Invite Friends” section, and this link connects the referred person to the referrer. On Sumeria, go to the “Me” screen and then “Referral”. On Finary, the link or code can be found in the app's Referral section once you have signed in.

High-street banks, insurers and network operators. The code can be found in the customer area, in a dedicated section, and can sometimes be obtained from an adviser. This is the case with SFR and AXA, where the agent can also provide it, as well as Direct Assurance, where the code must appear on the quotation before it is signed. On Société Générale, the code is entered during the account-opening process, whether in a branch or online.

Professional services and platforms. The link can be found in the account area, under the referral section. On JoinSecret, the personal link takes the form joinsecret.com followed by an identifier, and the referred person must create their account through this link. On PayPal, the section only appears when a campaign is running, which explains why it can sometimes be impossible to find.

Codes and links do not work in the same way

A code is a string of characters that must be copied into a field. A link already contains the referrer's identifier and connects the registration automatically. When a service offers both, the link is safer: it does not depend on a field that the referred person might forget to complete, nor is it vulnerable to typing errors.

Some services only provide links and no codes. In this case, a “referral code” circulating on a forum or deals website is either a disguised link or an influencer code, whose terms are not the same as those for referrals between individuals. The distinction can rarely be spotted at a glance; it must be found in the programme terms.

The three mistakes that void the reward

Entering the code after creating the account. This is by far the most common mistake. The account is linked at the time of registration: after this stage, most programmes offer no way to correct the omission. Sumeria is an exception and allows a code to be entered later under certain conditions, but this is an isolated case.

Using a stranger's code found online. The code works, but the reward goes to its owner, not the person you know whom you intended to thank. If you want someone to earn the reward, ask them for their code rather than searching for one.

Creating the account first and looking for the code afterwards. This is the same mistake as the first one, seen from the other side: the reliable approach is to get the link before installing the app, not after confirming the registration.

How to check whether a code found online is worth using

There are three reliable indicators, and the absence of just one is enough to disqualify a page: a displayed verification date, the name of the programme and its terms, and an explanation of who receives what. A page that displays a code without any of these three elements does not tell you whether the programme is still open.
