Landing in France: plan your first few hours

Your first objective is simple: reach the correct accommodation by a route you understand, with a second option ready. Before departure, save the full address, entry instructions, exact terminal or station and a working contact offline. This prevents a weak battery or patchy connection from turning a routine transfer into guesswork.

Save four details offline

A booking name may differ from its street address, and a large airport may have several terminals. Put the following details in one readable note or screenshot:

Detail What to confirm
Arrival point Exact airport, terminal or station
Accommodation Full address, postcode and entry instructions
Contact Phone or messaging method that works without a French number
Transfer Main route, last departure and a separate fallback

France has extensive regional and urban transport links, but the useful route depends on the city, terminal and time. Check the airport or local network's official page on the day of travel and save the selected journey. A screenshot from an earlier week is not proof of the current timetable.

Complete arrival formalities before planning the transfer

Keep your passport, any residence documents and supporting records accessible until controls are complete. Travellers arriving from outside the European Union may need to declare regulated goods or cash and equivalent instruments above €10,000. If unsure, ask French Customs before leaving the control area.

After collecting luggage, confirm the terminal shown on local signs before opening a route or ride app. Similar exit names can lead to different pickup areas.

A practical 90-minute plan

Moment Decision Fallback
Before leaving the terminal Confirm the address and tell the host about a delay Use the official information desk
Before buying a ticket Check destination, direction, transfers and last departure Ask the official network for the next workable route
Before accepting a ride Match the displayed destination and quoted amount Return to the official taxi rank or public transport
At the address Check the street number and entry instructions Contact the accommodation without handing documents or codes to a stranger

For a taxi, use the marked official rank. For a ride-hailing service, match the vehicle registration, pickup point and destination in the app before getting in. Uber and Cabify only make sense when the service operates in the relevant city. A referral benefit is not a reason to choose a less practical or more expensive trip.

Payment, connection and battery

Keep one main payment method and a separate backup, such as another card or enough cash for the transfer. Check the amount and currency before confirming. Download the relevant map area, keep the booking number offline and store the accommodation Wi-Fi details if they were provided securely.

A charged power bank is often more useful than installing several new apps after landing. Start with the official transport information and the option you prepared.

If the flight is late or you arrive at night

First send the accommodation your estimated arrival time and ask for written confirmation of any changed entry instructions. Then recheck the last departure on the operator's official site. If it has passed, compare the official taxi rank, an available ride service and, if necessary, nearby emergency accommodation. Do not follow an unsolicited driver away from the marked pickup route.

The best option is the one whose departure point, price or ticket, destination and fallback are understood before you leave.

Emergency numbers worth saving

112 is the European emergency number and is free, 24 hours a day. French public information states that 112 operators can respond in French or English. In France, 15 is for urgent medical help, 17 for police or gendarmerie and 18 for the fire service. These numbers are for emergencies, not route or booking enquiries.

Is your arrival plan ready?

Question 1 of 3

Do you have the full address and entry instructions offline?
Have you checked a main route and its last departure?
Do you have a separate fallback?
