Airbnb referrals 2026: complete host and traveller guide, amounts and conditions

There are two Airbnb referral programmes, not one, and they are constantly confused. The host referral can pay from 51€ to 765€, one of the most lucrative in travel, but it is hard to trigger: you need to know someone with accommodation to rent who is not yet a host. The traveller referral offers only a modest travel credit, but is easy to use: many people have never booked on Airbnb. The key is knowing which one to activate for the person in front of you.

Airbnb has 4 million hosts and 400 million travellers: a two-sided marketplace, hence the two programmes.

Host and traveller: the distinction that changes everything

Host referral Traveller referral
Referrer reward 51€ to 765€ Variable travel credit
Trigger First booking received by the new host First booking made by the new traveller
Eligible referred person New host, never previously hosted New traveller, never previously booked
Difficulty High, few candidates Low, many candidates

The good news is that both are independent and can be combined. If you know a future host and a future traveller, you can receive both bonuses.

The host programme: 51€ to 765€, but targeted

Why such a wide range? The bonus is indexed to the value of the first booking received by the new host. A Paris flat at 200€ per night rented for four nights does not generate the same result as a 30€ room for two nights. Airbnb does not publish the exact formula, but the logic is clear: the larger the first booking, the higher the bonus. The trigger is the completed booking, not simply creating the listing.

Target people whose accommodation is sitting unused: an underused second home, a spare room, a property empty during an expatriate assignment or a flat left vacant during a move. Useful points include income from the first booking, complete flexibility over dates and included AirCover insurance. Also mention local rules, such as the 120-night annual limit for a main residence in Paris and the requirement for a tenant to obtain the owner’s agreement before subletting.

The traveller programme: easy, but modest

The target is broad: people who still book exclusively through Booking, Hotels.com or traditional hotels. The referred person receives credit on their first booking and access to accommodation that is often more spacious and cheaper than a hotel, especially for groups or several nights. The referrer’s bonus is lower than on the host side, but the success rate is much better.

Airbnb versus the alternatives

Platform Referral Model
Airbnb Host 51-765€ / traveller credit Peer-to-peer accommodation
HomeExchange 250 GuestPoints Home exchange, no rent
Booking ~15€ (to be checked) Commercial booking
VRBO / Abritel Variable (to be checked) Accommodation, mainly for families

The genuinely different alternative is HomeExchange: no money passes between individuals, but GuestPoints provide accommodation. Its 250 referral points have practical value, not cash value. Booking and VRBO retain a conventional commercial model, with smaller bonuses to be confirmed on their websites.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the host amount vary so much? It depends on the first booking received by the new host: the higher the price and duration, the higher the bonus, up to 765€.

Do you have to be an owner to host? No. A tenant can host with the owner’s agreement and in compliance with local regulations, including the 120-night annual maximum for a main residence in Paris.

When does the referred person receive their share? For travellers, the credit generally applies to the first booking. For hosts, the referrer’s bonus arrives a few weeks after the booking has been completed.
