Are referral rewards taxable in 2026? Tax treatment of referral bonuses in France

The question comes up repeatedly as soon as several programmes are combined: are my referral rewards taxable? The short answer is, in principle, yes, but the reality is more nuanced than that “yes” suggests. Before going any further, an important clarification: I am not a tax adviser, and this article is not tax advice. The rules are complex and depend on your personal situation. For any decision, consult a professional or your tax office. Data checked on 23 April 2026 on impots.gouv.fr.

The principle versus practice

In law, it is clear: all income is in principle taxable, whatever its source, Article 12 of the General Tax Code. A sum received in exchange for an economic activity, such as recommending a service and bringing customers to a company, may be classified as taxable income. There is no category of “referral rewards” that is completely exempt.

In practice, things are more flexible. The tax authorities do not individually pursue someone who received 10€ from Back Market or a Trade Republic share during the year. The actual risk depends on the amounts, frequency and nature of the rewards. The key issue is locating your situation on this scale.

The nature of the reward changes everything

Not all rewards are viewed equally by the tax authorities, and this is the most useful point to understand. The more easily a reward can be converted into money, the more it resembles taxable income.

  • Cash or bank transfer: the form most clearly classifiable as income. A transfer of 50€ or 100€ received for a recommendation may fall under “miscellaneous income” or non-commercial profits, depending on the circumstances.
  • Shopping vouchers (Amazon, gift card): determinable monetary value, treated as benefits in kind, although small occasional sums rarely cause problems in practice.
  • Platform credits (Lovable, Proton) that cannot be converted into cash: more ambiguous treatment. Their value is limited to use on the platform, which puts them at some distance from ordinary monetary income.
  • Free shares (Trade Republic): a financial asset. Their value when received may be taxable as a benefit in kind, and on resale, capital gains fall under the securities regime, 30% flat tax on gains from the sale of shares.

What amounts really raise the question?

There is no official threshold exempting referral rewards as a category, but a few common-sense guidelines help assess the issue:

  • Less than 100€/year: in practice, the vast majority do not declare these few dozen euros, and the risk of an audit is very low. This does not make it legally perfect, it is simply an observation.
  • 100€ to 500€/year: the question becomes serious. By combining several active programmes, Trade Republic, AXA, Back Market, PayPal and others, the total can rise quickly.
  • More than 500€/year: declaring becomes an issue that must be dealt with by a tax adviser. Above 1,000€/year on a systematic basis, the authorities may consider it an undeclared economic activity.

How to declare, if you have to

If, after consideration or advice, you decide to declare the rewards: box 5KU on the income tax return, form 2042, is the one most often cited for miscellaneous non-employment income and occasional income that does not fall into a main category.

However, the precise classification, BNC, miscellaneous income or benefits in kind, may vary according to your situation, and the correct box may differ from 5KU. Rather than guessing, have it confirmed in advance. Three reliable routes are available: use the secure messaging service in your personal account on impots.gouv.fr to ask your tax office the question in writing; call 3609; or consult an accountant, whose 30-minute consultation on this issue generally costs 50 to 100€ for a definitive answer.

Three practical cases

Around 200€/year in various rewards. A few friends referred to Trade Republic, Back Market, AXA and small rewards. The practical risk is low and most people do not declare them, even though in theory they should. To comply, ask your tax office.

3,000€/year on a systematic basis. Several actively managed programmes, promotion on social networks and hundreds of referred people. Here, you move beyond “small supplementary income” to a genuine economic activity, which may require registration as a self-employed sole trader or micro-business. You must consult an accountant.

Platform credits only (Lovable, WeWard, Proton). Treatment is less clear. Lovable credits usable only within the tool have low tax value; WeWard, whose points can be converted into euros subject to conditions, lies in a greyer area. Check the position if the amounts become significant.

The specific case of credits

Programmes offering credits rather than cash deserve separate consideration. Lovable credits, if they cannot be converted into money, have debatable tax value: the authorities are interested in monetary income, not a credit that can only be used to consume a service. A free Proton month is a benefit in kind worth the subscription price, namely a few euros to a few dozen euros, amounts that are generally small. WeWard, on the other hand, allows points to be converted into real euros subject to conditions, bringing these rewards closer to monetary income and warranting verification if the sums increase. The general rule, once again, is that the more convertible into cash something is, the more likely it is to be taxable.

In summary

The taxation of referral rewards is a real issue, but it is often overestimated for small occasional amounts. In principle, all income is taxable; in practice, rewards below a few hundred euros per year are rarely declared and are seldom targeted. For significant amounts or systematic activity, declaring them, and possibly registering as a business, becomes unavoidable.
